2007 Highlights

2007 was the most successful season in team history. SRJC was led by two returning players this season, Alexandra Niemiec and Erika Cruz who provided leadership and experience to the 11 new freshmen players. This team competed in the strongest conference in the north, the Big 8, which is also one of the strongest conferences in the state. This created a slate of aggressive and close conference games throughout the season. After the first round of conference play, the Cubs went into the Big 8 Championship Tournament seeded third. They opened with a 7-6 OT battle against rival Sierra College and advanced to the title game after upsetting the No. 2 seed Delta College in the semi-finals. Finishing second overall in the Big 8, the Cubs were ranked No. 2 in NorCal and received a first-round bye at the NorCal Playoff Championship Tournament; thus opening with and defeating, Coast Conference Champion, Foothill College to advance SRJC to the NorCal Championship game in which they battled to a 10-12 loss to American River. Nevertheless, the win over Foothill advanced the Cubs to their first State Championship Tournament appearance in school history as the No. 2 seed from the north. SRJC opened with a 6-5 victory over Fresno City and a loss to the eventual state champions Riverside. This put the Cubs into the bronze medal match against defending state champions Long Beach. SRJC held the vikings to a 3-5 score at half, but eventually conceded the match and finished No. 4 in the State of California. 11 of our 13 players will be returning next season to go to battle again for the Big 8 and NorCal titles, and to improve their ranking at the state tournament in 2008. Individual honors and awards are listed below. Congratulations to all of the 2007 Bear Cub Women's Polo Players on a history making season.
