The SRJC Varsity Men’s Swim and Dive Team successfully defending their 2008 conference title by, capturing the Big 8 Conference title again in 2009. More importantly they were the California Community College state runner-up, finishing 2nd overall at the the State Championships in Long Beach improving on their 3rd place finish in 2008. Led by sophomore captains, Tyler Hannis, David Hernandez, and Kieffer Holmes, the Cubs boasted again one of the deepest teams in California and SRJC school history with an incredible amount of talent throughout the entire meet line-up. First year swimmers David Banks and Alex Simenstad combined with the sophomore studded speed including Walter Gault, State Champion in the 100 Breast, and helped to break both the 200 Medley Relay time as well as the set a new 800 Free Relay record (by over five seconds) which has stood at the school since 1979. Freshman diver Grant Slovick captured the Big 8 Diver of the Year Award after finishing first on the 3 meter and second on the 1 meter boards at the NorCal Diving Championship in April. Finally, taking care of business in the pool and in the classroom, Captain David Hernandez was named the National Scholar Athlete of the Year for two year colleges as a result of his All American performances in 08-09 as well as his perfect 4.0 overall GPA. The 2009 season produced 11 All Americans, 11 All Conference Athletes, 4 confrence records, and 12 new school records. Congratulations to the SRJC Men's Swim Team for one of the most successful seasons in community college swimming history. Individual and team honors are listed below.
