The 2008 SRJC Football Season produced another outstanding performance by the Bear Cubs. SRJC finished 8 & 3, their 12th consecutive winning season, and defeated Sierra College 28-20 in the Premier West Bank Bowl. In that game QB Adam Froman won Player of the Game honors by throwing for 525 yards and 3 TD’s. Froman threw for 401 yards in the first half as the Bear Cubs raced out to a 21-0 halftime lead. WR Cooper Helfet was selected Offensive MVP by catching 12 passes for 188 yards and 3 TD’s. Cornerback Diamond Weaver led the defense with 2 INT’s as the Bear Cub Defenders held Sierra College 22 points below their season average. For the past five season the Bear Cubs have played in the highly competitive, Nor Cal Conference, sometimes referred to as the “Super Conference” with league rivals SF City College, Butte College, Foothill College, Diablo Valley College, and College of San Mateo. The 2008 season marked the start of The Bear Cub’s association with Nike. The Cubs wear custom, state of the art Nike uniforms both at home and on the road, in addition, Nike outfits the players for off-season work out gear and cleats. In the thirteen years that head coach Keith Simons has been at SRJC they have produced 110 All Conference players, seven conference MVP's, four regional MVP's, 2 State Players of the Year (DB Scott Ware 2003, QB Adam Froman 2008), and 25 JC Grid Wire All-Americans. In addition, the Bear Cubs have been invited to participate in eleven bowl games and have gone “Bowling” 9 consecutive years, winning 7. The 2008 Bear Cubs placed 3 players on the JC Grid Wire All American Team (QB Adam Froman, WR Brandyn Reed, and DB Brandon Driver). Those 3 selections gave SRJC the most of any team in the country.

SRJC’s spread, no huddle offensive attack finished #1 in the nation in both passing yards and TD’s in 2008. The Bear Cub “O” has finished #1 in the nation in those two categories 7 of the last 9 seasons. In 2006 SRJC led the nation in points per game with 42.3. In 2007 they were 2nd in points per game and in 2008 the “scoring machine” finished 3rd with 42.5 points per game.
SRJC has produced 5 straight D1 QB’s and 7 Bear Cub QB’s have made the All-American Team in the past 8 seasons. In that same time span, 5 WR’s were named to the All-American Team. QB Greg Alexander finished his career (2006-2007) as the All Time National Leader in TD Passes with 76. Alexander, who starts for The University of Hawaii, broke and set 15 school records including
Passing Yards in a Game 612
Completions in a game 40 twice
TD Passes 7 twice
Career Completions 543
Career Passing Yards 6876 |

The “Code Blue” defense of SRJC had another great year in 2008. Their swarming effort and aggressive style of “in your face” defense wreaked havoc amongst their opponents and had QB’s scrambling for their lives. CB’s Brandon Driver (San Jose State) and Diamond Weaver (Akron) anchored the secondary, while LB Jared Periera (Sacramento State) and DE Don Pritchett (Fresno State) held down the trenches.
Once again the Special Teams were truly special and the Bear Cubs won games with big kick off returns, blocked punts and blocked field goals. Ian Mullin was the All-Conference and All Region Kicker and Bear Cub kick returners Brandon Driver and Brandon Lucas struck fear in the hearts of special teams coordinators all season. In game 9 the Bear Cubs returned 2 punt returns and 2 kick-off returns for touchdowns, blocked a punt and scored 77 points, which set a school record for points in a game.
