Ethnic Diversity in Literature

This course focuses on the comparison of a minimum of three ethnic groups represented by modern U.S. writers. Students will experience the rich diversity of the human imagination in reading literature from the past century, appreciate the value of varying voices and perspectives, expand their views of the U.S. historically, socially, culturally, and politically, and engage in lively discussions about race, ethnicity, gender and class. The writers and texts are not yet selected for this course. Check the web site later in fall 2008 for an updated description.
Two essays, a midterm and final are the major assignments for the semester.
We will read a variety of works by Asian, African American, Latino/a, Indian, White writers, including nonfiction, fiction, poetry, and drama. Works by the following writers may be included: James Baldwin, Louise Edrich, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, Zora Neale Hurston, Jhumpa Lahiri, Cormac McCarthy, Toni Morrison, Annie Prouxl, Amy Tan.
This course fulfills the American Cultures requirement at SRJC, as well as many diversity or multi-cultural requirements at other institutions.

Prerequisite: Completion of ENGL 1A or equivalent.
A study of ethnic literature in America. Reading, discussion and analysis of trends in the literature of three of the following United States ethnic groups: Native American, European American, Asian American, African American, Latino American. Readings will depend on the ethnic traditions selected by the instructor for the given semester but will consist of works from a variety of literary genres: nonfiction, fiction, poetry, drama and prose. The course will emphasize the cultural issues that shape each ethnic literature, as well as its special contributions to the overall American mix.
