SRJC English Department's Literature Offerings: Fall 2009 Literature Index: Introduction to the Novel ENGLISH 2 Johnny Sarraf Tuesday 7-10 PM Petaluma What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. --Holden Caulfield, The Catcher in the Rye Join us in English 2 as we read and discuss novels from British, American, Egyptian, Afghan, and Iranian writers. We’ll cover centuries of literary works and even discuss film adaptation as we examine the development of the novel as a literary genre. We’ll also consider how different critical perspectives allow us to understand novels in different ways. Most classes will be comfortable “roundtable” discussions where sharing your thoughts about the novels is encouraged. Come join our book club! 3 units/3 hours lecture. CR/NC option. Prerequisite: ENGL 1A or higher English Course. Elements of the novel form: narration, point of view, structure, plot, character, and metaphorical language, as well as themes introduced through reading and discussion of outstanding novels.
