What to do with an English Major

English is a major branch of the language arts; its main focus is on the written word. However, a broader, more commonly accepted definition would include the study, in all forms, of literature, speech and writing. The study of English orients students to the discipline of thinking.

After each of the occupations, the minimum level of education generally associated with the field is indicated by the following codes:

AA Associate degree (two full years of college study after high school) generally required or very helpful. In some cases, people enter the field after taking specialized courses which may not require two full years.
BBachelor's degree (four full years of college study after high school) generally required or very helpful. This maybe a BA, Bachelor of Arts or a BS, Bachelor of Science degree.
MMaster's degree preferred for the field usually requires one or two years of study after the Bachelor's. This maybe a MA, Bachelor of Arts or a MS, Bachelor of Science degree.
PFirst professional degree required, usually after completion of a Bachelor's degree. Illustrative professional degrees include BD, Bachelor of Divinity; LLB, Bachelor of laws; MD, Doctor of Medicine and DDS, Doctor of Dental Science.
DDoctoral degree is preferred for full professional status in the field. Examples are PhD or EdD which usually take from three to five years after the Bachelor's degree. However, interested students often enter this field as a research Assistant, RA or, Administrative Assistant. AA.
VIndicates requirements vary greatly and/or vocational training is generally required; may include a combination of academics and work experience.
