English is a major branch of the language arts; its main focus is on the written word. However, a broader, more commonly accepted definition would include the study, in all forms, of literature, speech and writing. The study of English orients students to the discipline of thinking.

Our Mission

Our mission is to make available to all residents of the District excellent introductory, college-level instruction in reading, composition, literature, and language study; to support those offerings with effective remedial instruction at a variety of levels; to monitor and administer an effective system of English placement; to promote understanding and appreciation of literature and language in the College and in the community at large; to keep English instruction up to date by developing and promoting worthwhile staff development among the Department's instructors; to promote a healthy and creative work environment and promote that in our students.
