Minutes 04/25/2002

EDUCATIONAL PLANNING & COORDINATING COUNCIL

Minutes of April 25, 2002

3:15 PM

Senate Chambers

ATTENDING: Kris Abrahamson, Ed Buckley, Terri Frongia, Jim Rose, Karen Kellam, Joan Scarborough, Rosemary Ward

1. Approval of Minutes

Minutes of March 14, 2002 were approved.

2. Status of Majors

Kris Abrahamson provided a review of the status of our efforts to strengthen majors. For 32 years we have had three majors approved: Nursing, Aeronautics, and Liberal Arts and Sciences, General. Many programs are now developing majors under the new, more rigorous guidelines, and the liberal arts major will need to be revised. Aeronautics will be eliminated, unless the department decides to propose revisions.

3. Update on Draft Policy on Certificate Residency

After meeting with the Academic Senate, Rosemary Ward brought in a revised draft of this policy, which now includes the requirement that a student must be enrolled at SRJC during the semester that the certificate is awarded. Rosemary will make other changes recommended by EPCC and return to the Senate when the item is on their action agenda.

4. Review of EPCC Activities in 2001-2002; Possible Agenda Items for 2002-2003

Rosemary Ward provided a summary noting that EPCC had discussed and/or provided recommendations on the following: assessment cut-off scores for English and College Skills, multiple majors and additional associate degrees, the information literacy G.E. requirement, and certificate residency requirements. EPCC also reviewed the component goals and other planning documents of Academic Affairs.

Possible topics for next year:

  • Limitations on CR/NC grades
  • Course advisories and prerequisites
  • Academic Senate goals
  • Self-Study planning statements
  • Area H of the G.E. pattern
  • International Studies
  • Weekend classes and possible "Weekend College" or similar cohort programs
  • Learning communities
  • Potential to provide courses for professional continuing education requirements
