EDUCATIONAL PLANNING & COORDINATING COUNCIL
Minutes of May 10, 2001
3:15 PM
Senate Chambers
Attending: Ed Buckley, Kris Futrell, Renee LoPilato, Warren Ruud, Stephanie Thompson, Karen Kellam, Janet McCulloch, Joan Scarborough, Rosemary Ward, Debi Schieberl, Meredith Gifford
1. Minutes
Approved minutes of March 8, 2001, after grammatical correction ("arisen" for "arose")
2. Compliance Issue Follow-up
Discussion of the state requirement to allow students to take only one non-transfer English course to fulfill the composition graduation requirement. The problem is how to comply, given language in the catalog and the current course numbering (English 100A, 100B, and 104). Academic Affairs and Student Services administrators will continue to ponder. (NB: this discussion continues)
3. Math Recency
The Board approved the recommendation to drop the math recency requirement "effective immediately." After discussion, EPCC recommended to A&R that this means we go back one year (i.e. to Summer 2000) in terms of waiving the recency requirement.
4. Academic Affairs Component Goals
Brief update by Buckley.
5. General Education, Academic Affairs Educational Plan, Majors, Duplicate Degrees
Kris Futrell updated the council on the status of all of these initiatives. A final report on General Education has been presented to the Senate (copy presented also to EPCC). The GE Task Force has disbanded! The bulk of the Educational Plan has been completed, with a final draft to come out this summer. A number of majors have been proposed, and the review process is underway.
The recommendation of the Majors Task Force is to allow duplicate degrees, provided that the student completes 18 units at SRJC after completing the first degree, plus any additional coursework required if there are changes in the general education requirement since the first degree. EPCC and the Senate will work on this next year.
6. "Wrap Up"
The Council reviewed the review of our year's work that was prepared by Chair Rosemary Ward and shared with the Academic Senate. There was a (deserved) moment of self-congratulation for a job well done by the Council, with special thanks to Rosemary's leadership. We also thanked and wished all the best to student representatives Debi Schieberl and Meredith Gifford.
