Minutes 11/09/2000

EDUCATIONAL PLANNING & COORDINATING COUNCIL

Minutes of November 9, 2000

3:15 PM

Senate Chambers

Attending: Ed Buckley, Kris Futrell, Renee LoPilato, Stephanie Thompson, Karen Kellam, Janet McCulloch, Joan Scarborough, Rosemary Ward

1. Cr/NCr Policy update

Renee LoPilato did a server survey and found that polices for limiting Cr/NCr units varies widely. We do not have a policy; we have a long-standing practice. After some discussion, it was decided that Renee would conduct some more research and come back with a series of options for development of a policy, one which allows the "personal enrichment" student some latitude to take courses for Cr/NCr while not misleading certificate or transfer students regarding the importance of taking courses for letter grades. These options will then be sent to departments for their review, after which EPCC will forward recommendations for the Academic Senate to consider.

2. Minutes of October 26, 2000

Approved.

3. Status of "Majors" Implementation

Kris Futrell reported that this is coming along well. Thus far there are twelve majors being proposed, five of them interdisciplinary.

4. Proposed Academic Integrity Policy

Ed Buckley reported that he and Dianne Smith are proposing some new language for the last part of this policy. It will return to College Council for review.

5. Status of Academic Affairs Educational Plan

Kris Futrell and Ed Buckley will be going to the next Academic Senate meeting to update them as to the status of this plan. We are currently reviewing the data gathering part of the plan, relating it to similar efforts in other areas, particularly the "Fact Book" being developed for IPC.

6. College Council Request for Review of EPCC’s Committee Description

EPCC reviewed the current description. The membership is fine, but it was noted that a faculty vacancy still exists. Rosemary Ward will request the Senate to fill the vacancy with an instructional faculty member and encourage that adjunct faculty be considered. EPCC proposes changing the committee function section of the description so that it reads as follows:

COMMITTEE FUNCTION: 1) To assist the Academic Senate in the development of sound educational policies, procedures, and practices by encouraging thorough discussions of current issues among all of the appropriate parties; 2) To review and assist in the development of Academic Affairs component goals; 3) To coordinate and review educational planning activities throughout the college; 4) To review and forward the Academic Affairs Educational Plan to the Institutional Planning Council; 5) To serve as a multi-constituent clearinghouse for educational matters not otherwise resolved.
