Senate Chambers

Attending: Kris Futrell, Renee LoPilato, Stephanie Thompson, Karen Kellam, Janet McCulloch, Rosemary Ward

1. Minutes of October 12, 2000

Approved as presented.

2. CR/NC Limits

Renee LoPilato reviewed the current policy which limits the number of units that may be used for CR/NC designation. The existing policy specifies a twelve-unit maximum, and students must petition to exceed this limit. Renee described that this appears to be a "local" policy without specific Ed Code guidelines. Discussion focused on the pros and cons of changing the maximum unit amount. Renee will survey other community colleges, and she will meet with Dianne Smith to review the history of SRJC policy.

3. Review of Upcoming Academic Senate Goals

Rosemary distributed the upcoming Academic Senate Goals, which were recently approved by the Senate, and will be sent forward to the next Board meeting. There was discussion and some clarification, including a few suggestions which Rosemary will take back to the executive committee.

4. Academic Integrity Policy

Rosemary shared a few thoughts regarding the current status of the "academic integrity" policy statement. A discussion centered around the policy as it is currently written and the procedures for implementation. There was consensus to review this topic again when Ed was present.

Guest: Bill Turner

1. Minutes of September 28,2000

Approved, with correction: Karen Kellam attended.

2. Integrated Master Plan Update

The plan has been approved by IPC. We have self-imposed a deadline of thirty days for the initial data-gathering phase. There was discussion regarding the various committees at the college identifying what might be considered essential data. We all hope it will be sorted out.

3. Final Examination Policy

Buckley distributed the existing policy and noted the various ways it is out of date. Should the institution develop a policy essentially reflecting current practice, or engage in a review of the current practice itself? Rosemary Ward will forward the item to the Academic Senate, seeking their direction; Buckley will see if there are state regulations regarding finals.

4. Adequacy of Course Advisories

Bill Turner reviewed the difference between "prerequisites" and course advisories, with the latter being a more simplified process to implement. Bill discussed how course advisories function as a "warning" regarding skill levels, and that current research seems to support improved student retention where advisories are provided.

There was consensus to review this topic again in January with Terri Frongia present.
