EDUCATIONAL PLANNING & COORDINATING COUNCIL

Minutes of February 10, 2000

3:15 - 5:00 PM

Senate Chambers

Present: Ed Buckley, Rosemary Darden, Reneé LoPilato, Stephanie Thompson, Kris Futrell, Karin Guzman, Karen Kellam, Anne O’Donnell, Joan Scarborough, L.J. Millick

Welcome to L.J. Millick, student representative and AS Law Enforcement Representative.

1. "KnowledgeWorks"

LuAnn Campbell presented "KnowledgeWorks," and noted its various recommendations.

2. Special Admission for High School Students

Bill Turner commented that once we allow high school students to be eligible to enroll in a course, we cannot impose extra requirements (such as an interview) as a condition of their enrollment just because they are high school students. After considerable discussion, it was decided that Academic Affairs (Buckley), collaborating with Student Services (Navarrette), will bring back draft guidelines that would provide for designated 300 level English courses to be excluded from the courses available to high school students.

3. "Academic Integrity" Policy

Discussion touched upon the need to address student cheating, but in the larger context of asserting the importance of ethical behavior on the part of both faculty and students engaged in the teaching-learning process. While sanctions are important, so are instructor practices that clarify the rules in their classes and reduce the temptation to cheat. The Academic Senate will be asked to name several faculty to a task force; the Associated Students will be asked to recommend student members as well. The task force will review the documents we have already accumulated, plus others if necessary, and develop draft language for consideration by EPCC. Existing language in the Student Conduct Guidelines will also be reviewed.

4. Implementation of Ethnic Studies courses into Area G

Before action is to be taken, Reneé LoPilato will review existing practices for implementing changes in the associate degree general education pattern.
