EDUCATIONAL PLANNING & COORDINATING COUNCIL

Minutes of February 8, 2001

3:15 PM

Senate Chambers

Attending: Ed Buckley, Kris Futrell, Renee LoPilato, Stephanie Thompson, Karen Kellam, Janet McCulloch, Joan Scarborough, Rosemary Ward, Debbie Schieberl

1. Minutes

Approved of Minutes of January 25.

2. Update on Cr/NCr Limitation

After much discussion, led by Renee LoPilato, EPCC decided to develop a draft policy that 1) sets no limit on the number of courses a student can take on a CR/NC basis, either per semester or for the life of the student; but 2) limits the number of units a student can take at SRJC as part of the associate degree requirement to eighteen. Karen Kellam and Rosemary Ward will bring a draft policy back to EPCC on February 22.

3. Further Suggestions for Academic Affairs component goals for 2001-02:

—Continue to implement the majors policy

—Implement changes in the GE pattern

—Review all policies related to the GE pattern and the degree, and revise as necessary

—Evaluate the new schedule template

—Reword the planning goal (3.0) so that instead of EPCC being the agent for planning, the VPAA acts in consultation with EPCC

—Develop a goal specific to Academic Affairs related to enrollment management.

—Develop goals related to weekend degrees and online degrees

—Develop a goal related to on-line recruitment, retention, and persistence

—Develop a goal related to the acceptance of units via portfolio/life experience

4. Update on General Education Model "E"

Kris Futrell reported that the Academic Senate approved the Information Competency Requirement but voted down the item allowing a maximum of six rather than three units from any one discipline. They did not act on recommendations 2, 3, & 4 (regarding GE area oversight committees, a "Connections Curriculum," or the development of 100 level courses. The GE Task Force is exceedingly close to finishing its work.

Ed Buckley questioned whether Title 5 permits the use of non-vocational, non-transfer courses in a GE pattern. This will be researched.
