SUBJECT: College Mission Statement Review

The College's Mission Statement is currently reviewed on a five year cycle. It was last reviewed, revised and reaffirmed in 1997. Though not due for its regularly scheduled review until the Spring, 2002, the Institutional Planning Council has decided it would be best to place the Mission Statement on a review cycle one year proceeding the next scheduled accreditation evaluation visit. Hence, IPC is commencing the review process this Spring in order to allow for its affirmation prior to the commencement of accreditation self-study activities. IPC requests the College Community's initial review and suggested revisions (if any) be made by Friday April 13th. IPC will review the College Community response and prepare a revised document for affirmation by the College Community prior to the completion of this academic year.

The original College Mission statement was first reviewed and revised in 1992 and then again in 1997. Though it is IPC's belief that the current SRJC Mission Statement adequately addresses the College's commitment to its stated purposes, it further believes the Mission Statement review process informs the institutional planning process and thus freshens the College's view of its mission and purpose. Please take time to read, discuss, critique and make any necessary edits to our current College Mission Statement (attached). Remember the Board adopted generalized Mission Statement and Institutional Goals represents the overarching institutional planning framework within which the annual Component Administrators' Goals and Objectives give specificity to the College's planned direction. IPC would be appreciative if mission statement review discussions were held within College-wide committees as well.

Again, IPC would like your opinion about whether the Mission Statement is in need of change. Please indicate your response below and return to IPC c/o Curt Groninga in Administrative Services by April 13, 2001.
