BACKGROUND

Each year the Institutional Planning Council (IPC) engages the College Community in a review of the existing Institutional Goals. The intent of the review is to keep the College's Institutional Goals current and dynamic. After extensive review and discussion, IPC has recommended the attached twelve (12) goals for Board of Trustees approval. For 2001/02, IPC further recommended emphasis be given to the following four (4) goals:

#4: Student Retention and Persistence

#6: Outreach and Recruitment

#7: Staff Development

#9: Institutional Effectiveness

Those goals receiving special emphasis will guide the component administrators in the development of their Component Area Goals.

ADMINISTRATIVE RECOMMENDATION

It is recommended that the Board of Trustees approve the 2001/2002 Institutional Goals.

2001/2002 Institutional Goals

IPC has designated, Student Retention & Persistence (#4), Outreach and Recruitment (#6), Staff Development (#7) and Institutional Effectiveness (#9) as those to be emphasized during 2001/2002.

Changes are italicized. The following represents the newly stated goals. Goals #1, 2 and 12 remain as previously stated.

1. Instructional Quality: To maintain, improve and emphasize quality and comprehensive instruction in an environment of academic freedom and high academic standards in both departmental and student services programs.

2. Student Success: To help students improve in setting educational and career goals, and in accomplishing those goals, by providing comprehensive instructional and student support services.

3. Program Development and Delivery: To explore, develop and support new substantive offering, new modes of delivering educational services and new sites to better serve the evolving diversity of our student body and the evolving intellectual, economic and technical needs of our community.

* 4. Student Retention and Persistence: To identify and implement activities designed to increase student retention at the course level and student persistence from the developmental level through the certificate, program, or degree level until each student’s educational goals have been met.

5. Lifelong Learning: To provide a wide variety of class offerings and activities that assist students of all ages and cultures with varying levels of academic preparedness in adapting to ever-changing conditions.

* 6. Outreach and Recruitment: To develop additional methods of recruiting in-state, national and international faculty and students of both genders and diverse ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.

* 7. Staff Development: To encourage and support continuous upgrading of skills and knowledge through programs and services designed to maintain a faculty and staff who are knowledgeable and current in their fields, practice diversity awareness, and demonstrate an appropriate level of technological competence.

8. College Governance: To maintain and enhance the governance of the institution through a well-defined participatory process and sharing of information to, from and between all constituent groups and at all locations.

* 9. Institutional Effectiveness: To design and implement a broad-based and integrated system of research, evaluation, and planning to assess institutional effectiveness and use the results for institutional improvement.

10. Institutional Quality: To improve the accountability and cost-effectiveness of all programs, services and facilities throughout the District while maintaining an environment that is supportive of a high quality educational experience.

11. Community Relations: To improve the two-way flow of information about the College vision, mission and goals to and from the total community and to establish a wide range of positive relationships within and outside the College.

12. Resource Development: To design and implement a comprehensive resource development plan for assuring access to a quality education for current and future generations.
