MEMORANDUM

BUSINESS SERVICES

TO: Curt Groninga, Vice President

Administrative Services

FROM: ~Lamont Royer, Controller and Director,

Auxiliary Services

DA TE: November 2, 1999

SUBJECT: Food Service Kiosks

.As I briefly mentioned, the Auxiliary Enterprise Committee has been reviewing the food service currently.offered by Canteen at Emeritus and Barnett.

The current food service stations are comprised of folding tables with portable ice chests, which is not conducive to a quality presentation. However, in spite of these conditions, the sales at these locations has grown substantially as well as requests for additional food service -especially specialty coffee and hot food items.

As a committee we have prepared the attached Concept Statement and walked the areas with several recommended locations for two self-contained, moveable kiosks (pictures attached). The committee has requested I forward this recommendation to your attention for consideration through the appropriate campus review process.

Please let me know what additional information may be needed to consider this recommendation.

Food Services Kiosks

9-15-99

BACKGROUND

For several years, the District's food service vendor (Canteen of

Northern California) has provided food service stations at several high

demand areas (Emeritus, Barnett and Baker Halls) .The sales at these

locations has grown substantially as well as requests from students, faculty

and staff for additional food items -especially specialty coffee and hot food

items.

The current food service stations are comprised of folding tables with

the portable ice chests which is not conducive to a quality presentation. Also, by being in the open it is a staff security issue in regard to the collection and disbursal of money and inventory .The Auxiliary Committee, along with

members of Canteen, has reviewed various options including the current use.

Other alternatives include upgraded carts and moveable self-contained

kiosks. The cost for upgraded carts is comparable to self-contained kiosks

($10,000+). The advantage of the kiosks is that they are self-contained, offer

more options in food service and security .One disadvantage to the upgraded carts is the lack of a place to store after hours The proposed moveable kiosks are approximately 10' x 12' with connections for electricity , water, and sewer, if accessible. They will support t expresso machines and hot food items, as well as cold storage.

~ RECOMMENDATION

.

After a thorough review of the various options available in providing extended food services to meet the requests/needs of students, faculty , and staff (both day and evening) to the various areas of the campus, the Auxiliary Committee recommends that two self-contained, moveable kiosks (sample pictures attached) be purchased. Recommended locations are: by the west wall of Quinn Swim Center, near Maggini Hall; and, by the fence area (southwest comer) of Plover Library .

The Committee further recommends that the above recommendation be forwarded to the Vice President for Administrative Services for consideration and approval by the District Facilities Planning Committee and the Board Facilities Committee, if appropriate.

BUDGET IMPACT:

The total cost of these kiosks, including utility hook-ups, will be born by

Canteen with no budget impact on the District.
