![]() FIGURING OUT THE FIGURENovember 4 – December 11, 2010
DJ Hall — Classical Hatching, Male Model, Conté Pencil, 19" x 24" Artist StatementIn college during the late 60’s I had no “formal” instruction as to drawing the human form but I had always been interested in anatomy, so life drawing was one of my favorite classes. For 35 years, the figure has been dominant in my body of work, which is often described as hyper-realistic in style, technique, and obsessive detail. In the late 90’s I joined a life drawing group so I could once again enjoy the pleasure of drawing from the live model. Also, at this time I began teaching Life Drawing at Otis College of Art and Design. A major benefit of this is that faculty can sit-in on classes and draw wonderful models. All of my life drawings since 1999 have been “styled” upon how/what we teach in the Foundation Program. I see these drawings as instructional and (unlike my studio work) I treat them without preciousness. August 2010
