Thomas Morphis, Straddling Artist StatementThis painting is one from a series on the theme of struggle. We all have wrestle with challenges of various sorts throughout our lives, so this is a rich source of inspiration for artworks and imagery. The title of this painting is taken from the clipping "straddling the cultures" which is collaged into the work. It is about cross-cultural differences and conflicts, and also about languages. The figures are taken from anonymous internet photos of amateur wresters and are intended to be a symbol of struggle. Teaching PhilosophyMy teaching philosophy is that students will initially be exposed to a variety of concepts, materials, techniques and artists; then as they begin to know themselves and their unique talents, they are moved toward more self-directed work, entering the life-long process of creative exploration and self-expression.The teacher of art is a facilitator providing an atmosphere for discovery and growth while also pushing students beyond their comfort zone. The art teacher is also a role model, an actively producing and exhibiting artist. Web site: www.thomasmorphis.com |
