Sondra Cohen, Materia Prima Artist StatementFor me painting is fundamentally a meditative process. The abstract forms these paintings take are, in part, the result of that process. As James Elkins defines it: “Paint is water and stone, and it is liquid thought.” These paintings are the latest in a series that began in 2005, with a line from Rilke’s Duino Elegy I: Teaching PhilosophyMy priorities as an art instructor are to provide students with the opportunity to succeed in mastering the skills required in each discipline that I teach, currently Art 4-Color. I design projects to elicit imaginative problem solving that demonstrate sequential mastery of specific skills. I provide practice in the manipulation of various media and I encourage participation in the critique process, which reinforces comprehension of concepts in art.
