Smartphones

For people on the go, Smartphones and other mobile devices have become an increasingly popular way for users to access the Internet, e-mail, contacts, and calendars. Although IT does not support Smartphones, the following reference information is provided to help you quickly configure your Smartphone device when accessing SRJC resources, such as college sites, wireless Internet access, and configuration information for your e-mail, contacts, and calendars.

Wireless Internet Access

Public wireless Internet access is provided by SRJC in the following locations:

To connect, follow your device's instructions for connecting to a wireless network (Wi-Fi) and choose the network called "SRJC Public Wireless." If you cannot see this network, you may not be in range.

Note, for the below configurations to work and you are connecting via our SRJC Public Wireless network, you must first agree to the agreement in a Web browser on the phone before being able to sync email, contacts, and calendars.

Public wireless Internet access is also provided by Sonic.net on most of the Santa Rosa Campus.

SRJC e-mail, contacts, calendars, and set up guides

Guides from manufacturers provide clear steps to setting up your Smartphone so you may access SRJC e-mail, contacts, and calendars. The guides and software on the phone you are using are subject to change by the manufacturers, and IT does not guarantee that the configurations will work.

When you have set up your Smartphone to access your SRJC account, IT recommends that you also set up an auto screen lock on the equipment, and, if possible, set a pass code for the lock screen.

Remember, IT cannot guarantee that the configurations listed below will work for you. The guides below are for over-the-air synchronization only. IT will not install Smartphone synchronization software on your computer. Do not contact IT about your Smartphone; you must contact the manufacturers directly for assistance.

  2. Select the check box labeled “Prompt if device unused for.” In the corresponding drop-down box you can specify any time from 0 minutes up to 24 hours. This specifies the amount of time, after your device powers down, before password protection is activated.
  3. Once you’ve entered your password and confirmed it, tap OK (or Done) and you’ll be asked if you want to “...save password settings changes?” Tap Yes (smartphones: Done).
  4. If you leave your device inactive for the period of time you specified in step 2 above, it will lock up. To access it, you will have to enter the password. If you think you’ll have a problem remembering it, write it down and keep it somewhere safe, but not on your device! If you do lose your password, you’ll have to hard reset your device.
