Voicemail System maintenance: Friday, October 26 from 6:00AM to 7:00AM

SRJC Community,

The Information Technology department will be performing a routine Voicemail System (not the phone system) maintenance on:

Friday, October 26, 2012 from 6:00AM to 7:00AM

During the operation, phone users will be unable to reach voicemail boxes. Please note that all phones will still operate properly. This work involves the use of an utility program that checks the software’s data structure, cleans up data corruptions, and fixes reference errors.

Announcing the New Equipment Request Form

 

IT is pleased to announce our new online Equipment Request Form! This form both replaces the Desktop Technology Replacement Form as well as adds new functionality to request equipment for you or your department.

The new form allows you to request equipment through the Bond Measure A funds, departmental funds, or grant funds. It is also much more efficient and the process for requesting equipment will be much faster. You will also be able to check status online and the system will automatically E-mail status updates along the way.

Slow Internet connection for all campuses this morning

SRJC Community,

Around 8:00 this morning, the Information Technology department was informed of a failure in the regional network. Our Internet Service Provider (ISP) explained that an equipment failure occurred in the AT&T's San Francisco hub. The failure caused our systems to fall back on the much slower contingency circuit. Although we do not have an ETA on the repair, these issues are often taken care of very quickly. We should be back at full speed in the next few hours.

Thanks for your patience.

UPDATE: As of 9:00 AM our primary Internet circuit is back online. AT&T have completed the repair.

Intermittent disruption of phone services on Saturday and Sunday, October 13 & 14

SRJC Community,

The Information Technology department will be performing a major upgrade of some servers integrated to the core of our phone system on:

Saturday and Sunday, October 13 & 14, 2012 starting at 9 AM

During the operation, there will be very short, intermittent disruptions of our phone services. We do not expect any significant downtime; however, our users may experience no-dial-tone failures few times these days.

In the unlikely event that the need to place an emergency call coincides with a disruption in phone services, please proceed as followed:

  • From a cellular phone, please dial (707) 527-1000 for emergency
  • From a Mitel desk-phone, please dial 1000 for emergency
  • Do not try the Cisco desk-phones; they will be out of service

Please, share this information with any Instructor or Staff that will be working during that weekend.

This work is part of a larger project to transition our current hybrid (Digital and Ethernet-based) system to a fully functional Voice-over-IP system, thereby providing CallerID capability and cutting significant support costs.

File Depot for Sharing Large Files

As we begin the new semester, the email administrators would like to communicate our recommendation for sharing large files via email.

Recommendation: For files larger than 200K we recommend using File Depot, a file sharing utility of SRJC. Using File Depot will reduce the stress on our email server while also being considerate of limited email inbox capacities of our colleagues.

This utility is versatile, available to all staff and faculty for sharing files with colleagues, clients, and students.

Contacting the Help Desk via Telephone

Hello SRJC Community,

Please make note that the SRJC IT Help Desk phone number is 707-524-1765 (if you are calling from a non-SRJC telephone.) If you are calling from an SRJC phone, you can simply dial 1765. This has been the help desk phone number for approximately the last 15 years.

IMPORTANT: Please DO NOT dial 527-1765. 527-1765 belongs to the home business of a community member who has filed a complaint with the IT Department. Faculty/Staff have been inadvertently dialing that number trying to reach the help desk. We appreciate your attention to this important matter.

HP 3000 Shut Down coming soon

The SRJC migrated our student information systems and financial and purchasing systems off of the HP 3000 computer over the last 3 to 5 years. It is now time to retire the HP 3000 as it is older than many of our students.

IT would like to announce that the legacy HP3000 is scheduled to be retired at the end of this month, August 31, 2012. If you have been accessing the HP3000 to obtain historical data, all historical data prior to 2008 has been archived to our new server. In addition, this will include the retirement of the HP 3000 line printer. Therefore, IT will no longer be able to print labels after August 31. Label printing will be the responsibility of each department. If you need access to specific historical data prior to 2008 or need instructions on how to print labels, please send a request through our IT Help Desk. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the retirement of the HP 3000 and the HP 3000 line printer, please contact Don Webb at dwebb@santarosa.edu or Tony Sawyer at tsawyer@santarosa.edu.
