What's New

The IT Blog is a good way to stay current on the latest information from IT including tips and tricks, maintenance updates, current outages, and more.

Notice: SharePoint Server Issue

The IT Department is working on issue with the SharePoint server.

We will send out an update when the server is available for use.

New technology deployments

The IT Department is happy to inform you that we are in the process of implementing new security features, which we hope will strengthen our network security and protect our data more effectively:

  • Next generation firewall
  • Cloud-based email anti-spam filter
  • Password management portal

As we gradually bring these features online, you may observe slight changes in our security requirements, such as email contents or virus and malware management. In addition, you will be offered the opportunity to reset your email password safely online. If you have any questions, please contact the Help Desk at (707) 524-1765 or help@santarosa.edu. Stay tuned for further communications.

Voicemail system upgrade- notice #2

Greetings College Community!!

The IT department is planning an upgrade of its current voicemail system during Spring Break, the week of March 17th 2014. The project will consist of transferring all the mailboxes (greetings & password) onto the new Cisco Unity voicemail system. Departments with complex phone trees may experience slight changes in functionality, but we will actively work to make this process as smooth as possible for our community. If you would like to discuss your Department phone tree regarding changes or greeting updates, please contact Davida Brookfield at 707-527-4415.

The new voicemail system offers complete integration with our O365 email system. In other words, voice messages are transcribed onto email with wave file attachment. Listening to the file and deleting the email will actually delete the voice message from your voicemail. Users will also have a web portal where to manage their voicemail box (only applicable for our cloud email users).

As we move closer to the implementation date, we will be sending out additional notices with specific instructions. If you have any question or comment, please contact the help desk via email at help@santarosa.edu

After Hours Telephone Service Maintenance

The IT Department has been notified of a maintenance window in which the vendor that provides our telephone service will be performing maintenance on their equipment which may cause the SRJC sites listed below to lose telephone service during the maintenance window.

Wednesday, January 29 & Thursday, January 30

Petaluma Campus & Windsor Public Safety Training Center

11:00pm (1/29) until 4:00am (1/30)

Integra (Telephone vendor) will be performing router maintenance that is expected to interrupt phone service for less than 10 minutes sometime during the maintenance window. Staff working on the Petaluma or Windsor/PSTC campuses in the late on Wednesday, January 29 or early morning on Thursday, January 30, are encouraged to carry a cell phone, should they have a need to reach District Police during the very brief telephone outage. District Police can be reached at (707) 527-1000.

Please distribute this notice to any staff expected to be working during these late-night/early-morning maintenance windows, to ensure they are notified of the potential service interruption.

Voicemail system upgrade

Welcome back to the Spring Semester!

The IT department is planning an upgrade of its current voicemail system during Spring Break, the week of March 17th 2014. After Hours Network Maintenance

The IT Department has been notified of a maintenance window in which the vendors that provide our telephone and internet connections will be performing maintenance on their equipment which may cause the Petaluma Campus to lose telephone and/or Internet connectivity during the maintenance window.

Monday, December 23, 2013
Connection between Santa Rosa & Petaluma Campuses
12:00am-6:00am

Comcast (Network connection vendor) will be performing scheduled maintenance that is expected to interrupt network connectivity between the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses. SRJC maintains a backup link for this connection and we expect that once the maintenance begins, our connection will fail-over to the backup link. Although the backup link provides a slower connection, due to the time of day (12 midnight) we do not expect any impact on college operations.

Please distribute this notice to any staff expected to be working during the early-morning maintenance window, to ensure they are notified of the potential service interruptions.

If you have any questions, feel free to reply.

Thank you.

Distance Education: Server upgrade and outage

On 2 January 2014, Distance Education will undertake the process of upgrading to new server hardware and software. The process will likely consume all day on 2 January, and might possibly extend through part of the day on 3 January.

During that period, all classes, sites, and services hosted on the Distance Ed server (online.santarosa.edu) will be completely inaccessible and out of action.

That means no CATE, no Moodle, no CATE-based departmental websites, no online orientation enrollments, no import of grades from CATE gradebooks into the faculty portal, no import of grades from Moodle gradebooks into the faculty portal, etc. All this is equally true for faculty, students, and everyone else. For all intents and purposes, classes, sites, and services hosted on the Distance Ed server simply will not exist while we perform this upgrade.

Please plan accordingly. We'll announce via campus-wide email when the server is back in action and everything is up and running again. We apologize for this outage, but we expect much faster and more reliable service with the new server cluster. Thanks for your understanding and patience.

Addendum to Server Update Night Notice

As part of this week’s sever update/reboot night scheduled for tomorrow evening (reference the notice that was sent on Monday) we will be upgrading the Microsoft Office suite of programs available for use on the Citrix Server (Access, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Publisher, Visio, Word) to the newest version – Microsoft Office 2013.

This software upgrade is required to stay current with new technology in support of our trial/testing of the Outlook 365 cloud email system.

We do not anticipate any problems, although there will be a point in the upgrade process tomorrow night where Microsoft Office programs will be unavailable via Citrix while the old version of Office is uninstalled and the new version is installed.
