This course is a comparative and historical analysis of society and individual behavior from a multicultural perspective. An examination of American ethnic/ cultural Groups (African, Asian, European, Latino and Native Americans) and experiences that influence behavior. The relationship between personality development and culture, barriers to cross cultural interaction and communication styles will also be explored.
Ethical Issues in Human Services (Coun 89)
This course is a comprehensive exploration of the basic ethical issues involved in client/patient rights and counselor/client responsibilities.
Introduction to Human Services (Coun 90)
Students develop a working knowledge of the various roles and duties of a Human Services Worker in society today.
Skills & Techniques in Human Services (Coun 91)
Students develop methods and techniques used in intake and interviewing.
Introduction to Group Counseling (Coun 92)
An introduction to the dynamics of group interaction with emphasis upon the individual's
firsthand experience as a group leader and member. The factors involved in problems
of communication, effective emotional responses and personal growth will be highlighted.
Emphasis will be placed on group process as a means of changing behavior. This course
is designed to help students who will function as leaders in a variety of small group
situations. (CSU)
Introduction to Case Management (Coun 93)
Students develop a working knowledge of the various roles and duties of a Case Manager
Intervention / Crisis Counseling (Coun 94)
Students develop working knowledge of crisis counseling.
Techniques used for intervention and crisis counseling, intake interviewing and referral
will be studied and practiced. Special attention will be given to the question, "What
is helpful?" and to the process of intervention; admitting and recording of
information as it pertains to alcohol and drug abuse clients.
Introduction to Advocate (Coun 95)
This course prepares the student to do advocacy work, while presenting a theoretical framework, investigating local resources and procedures, and developing advocate skills.
Disability and Society (Coun 96)
Students develop knowledge of the various roles and duties of a Disability Services Worker in society today.
Disability Services Strategies (Coun 97)
Students develop strategies and tools for working in disability service agencies
Occupational Work Experience (Coun 99I)
Counseling Occupational Work Experience Internship is supervised employment of students
that extends classroom learning to the job site and relates to the students' educational
or occupational goals. The Intern Program is for students who have declared a major,
have taken classes in the major, and are ready for on-the-job experience in a paid
or unpaid position. Students will acquire new knowledge, skills, and abilities to
prepare for a career in their chosen field. May be repeated for a total of 16 units
or 4 semesters. Must be enrolled in 7 units including Intern units for fall and spring
semesters. Summer semester requires Intern units and one other course. (CSU)
