All of the operators at the tracking station are volunteers and the key
operator must have an amateur radio license. Students will be encouraged
and will be trained to operate the station during Shuttle contacts, under
the supervision of the key operator. Students or community volunteers do
not need to have previous ham radio experience in order to serve as volunteers.
During the SAREX missions, the station will be staffed by volunteers. The
missions usually last from nine to 14 days, however, during each orbit the
station has only an 8-9 minute window to contact the astronauts. For information
on becoming a volunteer, please contact Herb Sullivan, 527-4675.
